Resources for Faculty, Staff, and Students

This page has been created to assist GSLIS faculty, staff, and students in achieving their GSLIS-related communications goals. The Office of Publications and Communications serves as the School's strategic communications and marketing unit.

In addition to producing high-quality publications that advance the mission of GSLIS, our staff are available to help in the creation of recruitment and marketing materials for academic programs, promotional materials for GSLIS-sponsored events, and advertisements in publications and conference programs. We also can consult with you on the production of other GSLIS materials such as posters, fliers, invitations, etc.

GSLIS Resources


I. Electronic Letterhead

GSLIS electronic letterhead is provided for the convenience of faculty and staff. According to campus letterhead standards, it may not be used to circumvent the requirements for printed stationery as described in the Campus Administrative Manual. The watermark of the University seal in the bond paper certifies to the recipient that the document is an official University communication, a requirement for some grants and in some legal issues.

  • This letterhead may be used for unofficial correspondence, both internal and external. When printed, the return address and footer appear in black rather than blue; this design element is required by campus in order to distinguish it from official letterhead as described above.


II. GSLIS Type Treatment and iSchools logo

The GSLIS type treatment consists of stylized text that identifies the name of the School. It should be used in all GSLIS materials and ideally in conjunction with the iSchools logo.

  • The iSchools logo also should appear in all GSLIS materials, preferably placed directly beneath the type treatment (as provided in the first bullet above) to strengthen awareness of GSLIS as an iSchool.

The Illinois Identity Standards include guidelines for the production of print materials. The I Mark must appear on the front of all print materials, and the Illinois logo or Urbana-Champaign logo must appear elsewhere in the materials. Campus web guidelines also are available.


III. PowerPoint Template

This template incorporates the GSLIS brand and is intended specifically for presentations.


IV. Generic GSLIS Template

This template incorporates the GSLIS brand and is intended for use in publicizing programs, events, presentations, etc. It can be customized with text relevant to the topic. The finished product can be printed in house, on campus, or through a local vendor.

  • This template uses the example of Alternative Spring Break, so that options for customized text can be recognized easily. Click on the wording you wish to change to open the text box. Photos also may be replaced to further customize the template.

Campus Resources


I. Illinois Identity Standards: General Guidelines

This page contains information about the versions of the I Mark, the use of trademark symbols, the Illinois and Urbana-Champaign logos, and the buffer zone to be used with I Mark.

    Note: A buffer zone of at least one-third the height of the I Mark must be maintained between the I Mark and any text or design element.


II. Logos for Official Campus Communications

Campus logos are available for download in various styles and formats. The campus logo appears within the section entitled "Urbana-Champaign Logo."


III. Campus Logos for Merchandise

When ordering merchandise such as coffee mugs or t-shirts, a campus logo for licensed merchandise should be used. These logos include a trademark symbol. When the 1867 version of the I Mark is placed on merchandise, it must appear with the registered trademark symbol ® and be produced by a licensed manufacturer. The same is true of the standard version of the I Mark, only the trademark symbol ™ must appear.


IV. Writing Style Guide

This resource provides general guidelines for text used in communications, including spelling, capitalization, usage of abbreviations and acronyms, correct placement of italics and quotation marks, etc. Specific entries in this guide supersede guidelines presented in other reference works such as The Chicago Manual of Style, 15th Edition and Webster's New World Dictionary.


V. Phantasm Photo Database

The Phantasm database provides "high-quality campus and stock imagery free to the University of Illinois community." It contains current and historical photos, suitable for Web pages, brochures, etc. Please note that images are NOT model or property-released. You must determine whether your specific use requires a model or property release.


VI. Office of Public Affairs

This site serves as a portal to a number of resources and services related to effective communications; e.g., developing Web sites, campus facts, and a resource library.
