OutreachGSLIS is unique among LIS schools in having a number of permanent units and services that integrate research, teaching, and public engagement. Many of the following provide students with real-world professional opportunities through graduate assistantships, practica, independent study, and volunteer projects. Center for Children's BooksThe Center for Children's Books, accompanied by its review journal, The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books, was founded in 1945. The Center contains an examination collection of more than 16,000 books for and about children and young adults that represents some of the finest modern literature published for young people in the country. In addition, the collection includes over 800 professional and reference books on children's literature. The Center's Bulletin is one of the most prestigious critical review journals of literature for children and young adults. Community Informatics InitiativeThe Community Informatics Initiative (CII) works with people to develop information and communication technologies to achieve their goals. It fosters collaborations across campus, local, national and international communities. Together, we build innovative community networks, community technology centers, software, and library services. Prairienet Community NetworkA major component of the Community Informatics Initiative, Prairienet is a member- and donation-supported community information network for Champaign-Urbana and the surrounding East-Central Illinois region. Most of Prairienet's services are provided by volunteers and are coordinated by its staff. GSLIS Center for Informatics Research in Science and Scholarshipthe GSLIS Center for Informatics Research in Science and Scholarship, which conducts research on the use and impacts of information resources and tools in scientific and scholarly inquiry. LIS Access Midwest Program (LAMP)LAMP is a regional network of library and information science schools dedicated to promoting careers within the field by targeting promising undergraduate students at its member institutions to participate in activities and events designed to increase their awareness of the profession and to provide support for subsequent graduate studies in LIS. Publications OfficeThe Publications Office supports the mission of the Graduate School of Library and Information Science by producing a variety of scholarly and practical publications for LIS professionals around the globe. Drawing on more than 50 years as non-profit publishing specialists, they provide subject-specific publications that address current issues and also serve as historical archives. See their Web site for a catalog of quality books, journals, papers, and conference proceedings for teaching, scholarly reading, and daily application. UI Current LIS ClipsAn electronic current awareness service, look to UI Current LIS Clips to help you stay up-to-date with the latest issues in library and information science. This free service offers thoughtful, easy-to-read summaries of the key recent publications in the field, for practicing librarians, information professionals and academics. Each issue focuses on a topic of current concern to the Library and Information community. UI Current LIS Clips is a joint project of the Graduate School of Library and Information Science and the Library and Information Science Library.
