ALA Student Chapter Committees

The ALA Student Chapter has a number of committees that you can be involved in. Sign up for for a committee at the Student Group Orgapalooza, the first ALA General meeting, or by e-mailing -alaatuiuc, at gmail.com-.

Community Outreach Committee

The Community Outreach Committee provides a chance for the ALA Student Chapter and the GSLIS community to reach out to the immediate community and offer our enthusiasm, expertise and time to making their world better. Projects can include getting involved at area schools with storytelling or bookarts (make a bookmark) or reading contests, getting involved at senior centers with reading to the elderly, book donations, etc. Bringing the ALA Student Chapter into the community is new among student chapters, a great service to us and them. This committee was founded in 2002.

Conference Committee

The Conference Committee makes reservations for ALA conferences, compiles information for ALA student members attending the conference, and posts travel information updates. This is the only committee mandated by our constitution.

Field Trip Committee

The Field Trip Committee organizes field trips (big surprise there!), usually to a location within a days' travel of GSLIS. In the past, the Field Trip Committee has arranged visits to such places as the Chicago Historic Society, Chicago Public Library, Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum in Springfield, Curtis Orchard, and saw a play at Illinois State University.

Fundraising Committee

The Fundraising Committee plans and organizes events designed to raise money for ALA. The most notable fund raiser is the T-Shirt Sale, which is held in the fall semester. The committee members hold a contest for the design, run the voting, and get the t-shirts printed and sold.

International Committee

The International Committee plans activities relating to international librarianship. They assist in hosting visiting international librarians to the University and in planning programs relating to international librarianship.

Lecture Committee

The Lecture Committee is renowned for bringing prominent speakers to campus. During the fall of 1998, the Lecture Committee had the special honor of co-sponsoring a presentation by Ray Bradbury. Other speakers have included Chris Dodge from Hennepin County Library and Sara Ann Long, ALA President. Other notable speakers that have visited include former ALA Presidents Carol Brey-Casiano and Michael Gorman.

LEEP Committee

The LEEP/Distance Learning Committee was founded to help address the needs of GSLIS’s ever-growing distance learning population. The committee is comprised of interested LEEP and traditional on-campus students. The LEEP committee ensures that the general ALA Student Chapters are broadcast live online and are open to all members of the GSLIS community.

Professional Development Committee

The Professional Development Committee sponsors events designed to help students better prepare for their burgeoning careers. Of interest to most students are the Salary Negotiation Seminar presented by Leigh Estabrook and the Resume Workshop.

Queers and Allies

Queers and Allies is exactly what it sounds like: a group of queers and allies! We get together every few weeks for conversation and coffee, and we keep each other posted on campuswide events for the GLBTQA community. We're hoping to do some nifty stuff this semester like create a presence at LEEP weekend and host a movie night, and we'd love to get some new people with new ideas! Email -qandauiuc, at gmail.com- for more information.

Social Committee

The Social Committee hosts socials during LEEP weekend, plans the Winter Holiday Party, sponsors movie nights (featuring films with library-like themes), and other events as they come to mind.
